A stretch of I-41 South is shut down in the Neenah area because of a major pileup.
The crashes are near Highway G, between Neenah and Oshkosh. The DOT reported around 1 p.m. Sunday that I-41 South is expected to be closed for at least 10 hours.
The DOT is reporting one person was killed and a number of people were taken to hospitals. Everyone was taken away from the scene.
The Winnebago County Sheriff’s department says over 100 vehicles were involved, starting around 11:15 a.m. Deputies say whiteout conditions are to blame, and it may take weeks to figure out how the chain-reaction crash started.
Injured people were taken to Mercy Medical Center and Aurora Medical Center in Oshkosh, ThedaCare’s hospitals in Neenah and Appleton, St. Elizabeth Hospital in Appleton, and St. Vincent Hospital in Green Bay.
Deputies are coordinating with the hospitals to reunite people with their families. The Red Cross set up a warming shelter at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Neenah.
The vehicles are being taken to two impound lots to assess the damage.
The Winnebago County Sheriff’s department posted on Facebook after the pileup:
“Due to a multiple vehicle crash, Interstate 41 is shut down from Breezewood Lane in Neenah to Hwy 76 in Oshkosh in both directions. I-41 is shutdown further to the South. Travel conditions are treacherous with white out conditions. Please stay off the roads. 41 southbound is shut down at Hwy 10 and being rerouted to Hwy 76 around the incident.”
