A science teacher at Iola-Scandinavia’s middle and high schools is on the minds of students and staff today.
Andrew Schefelker of Oshkosh was killed in the massive pileup on I-41 in the Neenah area Sunday. The 30-year-old was in his first year with the district.
Principal Chris Nelson says Schefelker strongly believed in lifelong learning. He says Schefelker talked about staying in college to get more degrees, if he didn’t have to make money to pay the bills.
Nelson believes Schefelker was really into physics, and that was probably his best area in the sciences. He says Schefelker was a big Star Trek fan, and the Eagle Scout stayed involved with the Boy Scouts.
Counselors from around Waupaca County are at the school today to talk with students and staff. Students had a scheduled day off yesterday, so it’s their first time back at school since Schefelker’s death.
Seventy-one others were hurt when 131 cars crashed on I-41.
