The Red Cross is joining forces with fire departments around the Fox Cities to get more working smoke detectors in homes.
Spokesman Nick Cluppert says it’s part of a nationwide effort. He wants to help people to get out safely before firefighters get to a house fire, so crews don’t have to risk their lives rescuing somebody.
Appleton Fire Battalion Chief Joe Strauss says at least one smoke detector doesn’t work about half of the time they’re called to a house fire.
The Red Cross is planning a big installation day on May 4th, with a goal of putting more than 1,000 free detectors in homes. People can sign up at the Sound the Alarm campaign website to get one, or volunteer to help install them.
Cluppert and Strauss were guests on AM Fox Valley this morning.
