Areas around the Fox Valley and northeast Wisconsin are being hit by flooding.
In the downtown Fond du Lac area firefighters believe ice jams on the Fond du Lac River are to blame. They say the ice clogs up under bridges and stops the water from flowing through.
Division Chief Troy Haase of Fond du Lac Fire Rescue says they usually try to put holes in the river ice early to prevent that. He says the river thawed faster than expected, so they got bigger chunks that weren’t able to flow past the bridge.
Haase says crews removed some of the ice today. He says the water eventually goes to Lake Winnebago. But he says there’s about 20 inches of extra water at the mouth of the lake so there isn’t anywhere for it to go right now.
