There’s a push for federal funding to buy another ice-breaking boat for the Great Lakes to open the Port of Green Bay sooner.
Port Director Dean Haen says they’re waiting for the Coast Guard to come. He says the region is in need of raw materials, and the ice needs to be broken, before they can open.
Haen says right now, the U.S. and Canadian Coast Guards are working to open the Soo Locks in Lake Superior, and the top of Lake Huron. He believes they’ll head to Green Bay after that.
Haen admits it could take several years to get a second boat for the Great Lakes.
