A study finds that Wisconsin is the seventh most expensive state for county jail inmates to make phone calls.
The Prison Policy Initiative says the average cost is about $8.00 for 15 minutes. Some are as high as $22.00. The national average is $5.61.
Cpt. Dave Kiesner of the Outagamie County jail is surprised by those numbers. They charge about $2.40 for 15 minutes. He says it’s important for inmates to be able to connect with friends and family outside the jail.
The Prison Policy Initiative says high costs can keep inmates from reaching out to lawyers for representation.
