Firefighters are talking about steps people can take to help survive a fire.
De Pere Assistant Chief Eric Johnson looked at a house fire that happened in the city last week. He says the owner woke up to police knocking on the door instead of an alarm. He says that’s because the smoke detector didn’t have any batteries in it.
Johnson says they’re seeing more homes that don’t have working smoke detectors. He also thinks people should sleep with their doors closed at night. He says even that small barrier can keep a room safe from the heat for a longer time.
