The head of the Outagmie County Highway department is sharing stories of close calls by workers.
Commissioner Dean Steingraber wants people to hear them, so they drive more carefully in work zones.
He says crews head out when something falls off a vehicle, and ends up on a busy highway. Steingraber says they’ve had plenty of incidents where drivers get too close and clip off the side mirrors of department vehicles.
Steingraber believes drivers often ignore flaggers at road construction sites because they’re angry and don’t want to wait. He says that can lead to head-on crashes. He thinks some drivers don’t respect flaggers, or other drivers on the road.
