A Republican lawmaker is not on board with plans to build a youth prison in the New London area.
Rep. Michael Schraa of Oshkosh wants two facilities to go in the southern part of the state. He’s the chair of the Assembly corrections committee, and he says about 80 percent of the inmates at the troubled Lincoln Hills facility are from Milwaukee, Racine, and Kenosha counties.
He says putting two youth prisons in those areas would fit the goal of keeping teens closer to their families.
Schraa believes they could build a third higher security prison in central Wisconsin to accommodate the rest of the state.
He’s also criticizing Governor Evers for proposing the site in the Town of Hortonia, near New London, without reaching out to local officials first.
Schraa was a guest on Fresh Take with Josh Dukelow on WHBY this morning.
