Overtime hours for state prison guards are up by more than 50 percent over a four-year period.
Turnover and vacancy rates also climbed during that time. A state audit shows turnover numbers rose to 26 percent, and vacancy rates doubled to 14 percent.
Republican Sen. Rob Cowles of Allouez says that’s something they need to focus on right away. He says it could take several years to fix the issue.
Overall spending on the prison system went up nearly three percent during the four years. The population increased by eight percent over 10 years, to nearly 24,000 inmates.
