A Howard man is seeing a rare white turkey near his home.
Joe Rabitoy has been taking pictures of the animal daily. He says the bird stands out in the flock.
DNR biologists say it’s hard to determine how rare the bird is without seeing it up close. About one in 100 wild turkeys are smoke gray and one in 100,000 are true albinos.
It’s legal to hunt white turkeys in Wisconsin, but this spring people can only shoot males. The Howard turkey is a female so she’s safe.
