The federal Medicaid expansion is officially out of the version of the state budget from the Legislature’s budget committee.
Majority Republicans removed the proposal from Governor Evers’ plan.
Democratic Sen. Jon Erpenbach of West Point accused Republicans of not wanting to help poor people.
Republican Rep. John Nygren of Marinette defended the move, saying all lawmakers want more people to have health care, but he doesn’t believe government is the solution.
Evers is vowing to keep fighting for the expansion. He says the federal funding would provide coverage to 82,000 people, while saving the state $320 million over two years.
