Some Calumet County board members are talking about plans for a new jail this morning.
There’s a proposal to spend $35 million on a new jail and to remodel parts of the current courthouse. The county’s Administrative Services Committee is expected to vote on the project this morning.
The jail would be built on land that’s next to the courthouse in Chilton. It would have a pod system with 89 beds. There would be room to expand to 128 beds. The current facility has 54 beds and it opened 43 years ago.
The Sheriff’s Department is sending between six and 15 inmates to other counties because of overcrowding.
The full county board could take up the proposal later this month.
