There’s a new option in the Appleton area to get homeless people back on their feet.
Pillars bought a four-bedroom house, and the nonprofit is renting the rooms to singles.
Executive Director Joe Mauthe says about two-thirds of single people at their adult shelter on W. College Avenue make enough money to rent an apartment. But he says the market is very tight, and some don’t have rental histories.
Pillars already plans to expand, after opening the first house last week. Mauthe hopes they can add a second one in the summer or early fall, and eventually a third home. That would provide 12 rooms for the program.
Pillars has a case manager to work with the renters.
