Outagamie County is a step closer to possibly putting a half-cent sales tax in place.
The county board’s finance committee signed off on the proposal on a 3-1 vote this morning. The plan will go to the full county board next Tuesday.
Supervisor Kevin Sturn of Greenville is the chair of the finance committee, and he supports the tax. He believes it’s about fairness, since people from Outagamie County have to pay a half-cent sales tax, when they’re in neighboring Calumet, Brown and Waupaca counties.
A county study found the tax could bring in $20 million in revenue in the first year. Visitors would pay about 25 percent of that.
Sturn says some of that revenue would be used to lower property taxes, reduce the county’s debt, and provide funding for communities and school districts.
The average taxpayer could save between $58 and $113 a year.
