A Republican leader believes the amount of money Governor Evers wants to spend on education is “not realistic.”
Assembly Majority Leader Jim Steineke of Vandenbroek supports the GOP plan to increase funding by $500 million over two years. It’s $900 million less than the $1.4 billion Evers is proposing. Steinke says that all of the new revenue would have to be spent on new schools.
Assembly Minority Leader Gordon Hintz of Oshkosh says Republicans have less money to work with because they don’t want to accept the federal Medicaid expansion. He believes that Governor Evers’ proposal is one of the best in years.
The plan from Republicans includes $100 million for special education. That’s one-sixth of what Evers wants.
