The proposed budget from Majority Republicans in the Legislature includes an increase of $500 million in funding for public schools.
That’s $900 million less than Governor Evers wants.
Republican Senator Luther Olsen of Ripon is on the Joint Finance Committee and he says they’re reaching a goal of providing 30 percent of a district’s budget.
Democratic Senator Jon Erpenbach is from West Point. He says school districts have been underfunded for a long time, and they’ve resorted to taxing themselves to solve the issue.
Of the $500 million increase from Republicans 100 million would go toward special education. That’s one-sixth of what Evers was proposing for special education.
