While stakeholders are working on a new truancy policy for Appleton schools they have to make sure the final proposal meets state laws.
If students don’t have an acceptable excuse for missing parts or all of five days within a semester they’re considered “habitual truants.”
Assistant Superintendent Polly Vanden Boogard says they want schools to take certain steps early on. She says they want evidence that things are being done.
The school board created a task force that’s working to put together a new truancy system. The district shut down the truancy court last year after hearing concerns about how some students were treated.
