A former Outagamie County Executive last tried to create a half-cent sales tax in the county 18 years ago.
Toby Paltzer supports the plan to bring in $20 million in new revenue to lower property taxes and reduce debt. He says when they took it up in 2001, some board members didn’t want to talk about it. He says it was something that needed to be looked at for a long time.
Last night’s county board vote was 28-4 to put the sales tax in place at the start of next year.
Paltzer remembers first talking about the sales tax in 1986.
He also backs the idea of giving some of the revenue to communities and school districts. He’s currently the chair of the Town of Center.
