A local 15-year-old boy is raising awareness about kids affected by the opioid epidemic.
Ashwaubenon freshman Steven Mommaerts calls himself an “opioid orphan.” He says his mom started doing drugs and she was in and out of prison. He says he started doing poorly in school because of the situation, but then he turned his life around.
Mommaerts decided to cut his mom out of his life in 2017. He started taking classes at a gym in De Pere called Warrior Jungle. He’s raising money through GoFundMe to sponsor other “opioid orphans” to take classes.
