Majority Republicans on the Legislature’s budget committee are scaling back a proposal from Governor Evers for the Department of Children and Families.
They want to give the agency $125 million. That’s about $65 million less than the governor included in his version of the budget.
Republican Rep. Amy Loudenbeck of Clinton says she has the same concerns as Democrats, when it comes to childhood development. She says they have heard from all over the state that the child welfare system is overwhelmed.
Democrats believe more needs to be done to support low-income families looking for child care to help break the cycle of poverty.
