Outagamie County Executive Tom Nelson is vetoing a proposed half-cent county sales tax.
He hopes he can convince enough county board members to uphold it.
Nelson says he’s been talking with board members and he believes several are seriously reconsidering their vote. The county board approved the tax on a 28-to-4 vote last month. A county study shows it would bring in about $20 million in the first year.
Supporters say they’ll lower property taxes and the average homeowner would save at least $50 overall. Some of the money would be used to pay off debt and the rest would go to communities and school districts. Visitors would pay about five million of the tax.
