Kaukauna could get some funding from the state to fix a lift bridge.
The mechanics of the Veterans Memorial Bridge broke down in the early 2000s. Assembly Majority Jim Steineke of Vandenbroek and the Legislature’s budget committee added some money for the repairs last week.
Kaukauna Mayor Tony Penterman is hopeful the project will stay in the final version from Governor Evers. He says taxpayers were looking at a $2.2 million budget.
Without the special grant the state wouldn’t be responsible for paying for the work. That’s because the problem is mechanical and not structural.
The Coast Guard is ordering the city to have the lift bridge up-and-running by May of 2021.
