The head of the Oshkosh police department believes opioids, mental health problems, and domestic violence are the biggest challenges facing the city.
Chief Dean Smith thinks domestic abuse isn’t something that can be solved by traditional crime-prevention methods. He believes they’re crimes of emotion, and difficult to prevent.
Smith believes it helps if police know about any about any previous arguments or issues with a couple, when officers are going to a domestic violence call. He says they could try to use mental health-related techniques in those situations.
With opioids, Smith says they could add a second special drug unit, and they would both stay incredibly busy.
