Two local lawmakers aren’t on the same page on how to pay for road projects in the state.
Democratic Assembly Minority Leader Gordon Hintz of Oshkosh thinks raising the gas tax is a better way to make sure all drivers pay their share.
Republican Assembly Majority Leader Jim Steineke of Vandenbroek believes there are better options. He doesn’t think raising the gas tax would be sustainable long term. He says they’re exploring other ideas like tolling and mileage fees.
Steineke says increasing the vehicle registration fee by $10 and doubling titling costs, probably isn’t everyone’s first choice. That’s what Majority Republicans on the Legislature’s budget committee want to do.
Hintz says that means Wisconsin drivers would be subsidizing people from Illinois and Minnesota that use our roads.
Hintz and Steineke were guests on Fresh Take with Josh Dukelow on WHBY this morning.
