The state’s top cop wants to make sure the backlog of untested sexual assault kits never happens again.
Attorney General Josh Kaul is introducing a bill that he says would bring suspects to justice a lot faster.
Kaul wants to make the DNA testing process more efficient. He says right now the delay in testing is too long, so he wants to make sure the labs are working effectively.
Kaul says last year the average wait time was about 80 days. He thinks it should be less than two months. Kaul also wants to keep rape kits on file for at least 10 years.
Governor Evers has shown support for the bill.
