The City of Appleton might start charging people that use the smallest garbage carts.
Public Works Director Paula Vandehey says they haven’t had a weekly pickup fee for the 30-gallon size. The municipal services committee is agreeing to a 50-cent charge. The city council would also have to approve it.
Vandehey is asking for the change. She says when they raised the prices of 60- and 90-gallon prices, some people went down to the free size. She says they then had a problem with overflow, and people getting a lot of extra stickers.
Vandehey says that’s because workers have to get out of the truck to pick up the extra bags with stickers or bigger items.
The fee is part of a package to raise about $450,000 in additional revenue. Monthly parking permits could go up from $30 to $40.
