A bee expert is calling honey bees “fuzzy little teddy bears.”
Lawrence University assistant professor of biology Israel Del Toro believes having hives and gardens on rooftops is good way to feed them. He says that’s because they don’t have to go far to eat.
A proposed rooftop hive in downtown Appleton is getting some attention.
Del Toro says those setups actually minimize people’s interaction with bees. He says bees are only likely to sting when their colony feels threatened. Del Toro believes if people are 10 feet or more away from the hive, then they’re unlikely to get stung.
Appleton’s Board of Health is signing off on the proposed rooftop beehive at McFleshman’s Brewing Company on State Street.
The city council will take up the idea next Wednesday.
