A local advocate for refugees says most have to go through a lengthy process before they can move to the U.S.
World Relief Fox Valley Director Tami McLaughlin says it can take anywhere from 18 months to three years, and there are background checks and health screenings.
She says they’ve welcomed over 900 refugees in the past five years. McLaughlin says community members are working with refugees to develop resources to break through the language barrier.
She believes the biggest misconception is that refugees make our country more vulnerable to terrorism. McLaughlin says there’s never been an act of refugee terrorism in the U.S.
It’s World Refugee Day, and the group is celebrating by taking more than 100 refugees from the Fox Valley to a Wisconsin Timber Rattlers game tonight.
