Appleton’s city council wants to hold special elections to fill two open seats.
Alderwoman Rachel Raasch is resigning in District 6 and Alderman Keir Dvorchek already stepped down in District 15. In recent years the council has appointed someone to serve the rest of a term.
Members voted 12-to-one to order the elections. Alderman Chris Croatt believes people should be able to choose their representative instead of having the other council members decide.
City Clerk Kami Lynch believes it will cost between $5,000 and $6,000 to hold the elections. She says that total would go up if they have to hold a primary.
City leaders are still working on the details of when candidates would have to file and the actual election dates. The District 6 term will end in April of next year and the one in District 15 runs until April of 2021.
