Appleton police are asking workers at Ascension’s St. Elizabeth Hospital to use crosswalks when they walk to the building.
People have to cross Oneida St. to get from the staff parking lot to the emergency room. But the crosswalks are at the ends of the block and some argue it’s too far away.
Officer Meghan Cash says they put up signs to remind people not to cross there. She thinks it’s about safety. She says people have been injured at several crossings around the city, and they want to prevent that if they can.
Hospital leaders asked the city to add a crosswalk in the area when they rebuilt Oneida St. A committee denied the request.
Workers say if they’re called in for an emergency they have to get in the building quickly. They could face a fine of about $175 if they jaywalk.
