An advocacy group is warning against new highway projects in the state budget, including the I-41 expansion from the Fox Cities to De Pere.
The head of Wisconsin Public Interest Research Group Peter Skopec believes safety is important. But he thinks adding lanes to highways doesn’t necessarily make them safer. He says science shows by adding more lanes to the highway, more drivers would take that route.
He points to studies that show overall crash rates may decrease by adding lanes, but the severity of them may increase, especially during off-peak hours.
He thinks the state should spend more money on alternatives like public transportation.
