The rainy spring is causing some problems for hemp farmers in northeast Wisconsin.
Mike Omernik has 50 acres of the crop in Shawano County. He says the weather put them behind about two weeks. He says they have growing degree days, which measures how many days it’s warm enough for a plant to grow. He says they’re almost 9% behind the average.
Omernik says the fields are starting to thrive as it warms up.
State lawmakers lifted the ban on growing industrial hemp in the state in 2017. Many farmers are still in the learning process for the crop.
