The new state budget signed by Governor Evers doesn’t fix what’s called the “Dark Store Loophole.”
A number of big-box retailers across Wisconsin are suing communities to try to lower their assessments to the same level as a vacant building.
Republican Representative Mike Rohrkaste of Neenah doubts anything will be done soon. He says there’s a good amount of support to make some change. He hopes there will at least be some compromise to improve the situation.
The City of Oshkosh has had to pay back more than $1 million in property taxes to businesses because of the Dark Store Loophole.
