A new system to deal with truancy in Appleton schools could include a bigger focus on middle school students.
Assistant Superintendent Polly Vanden Boogaard worked with a special task force. She says they’re looking at how they can be more proactive with their alternative programming, and their staffing in their at-risk area.
Vanden Boogaard believes if they can develop relationships with students at the middle school level that could prevent truancy issues in high school.
The school board is taking up a series of recommendations to deal with truancy. The district shut down its truancy court last year, after complaints about how some students were treated.
