There’s talk of possibly eliminating the coroner’s position in Winnebago County, and switching to a medical examiner.
County Executive Mark Harris says they might have to wait until the end of outgoing coroner Barry Busby’s term. Busby was re-elected last year, and there are three years left on the term.
Harris says Governor Evers will appoint the successor, and it will be up to that person to decide whether to stay on for the rest of the term, or agree to a change before then.
The coroner is an elected position in Winnebago County. County leaders could hire and fire a medical examiner.
The county board’s judiciary and public safety committee will consider the idea next Monday.
