A new sculpture is taking shape outside of the Appleton Fire Department’s station on Drew Street.
It’s going to be a tribute to firefighter Mitch Lundgaard, and three others from the department who’ve lost their lives in the line of duty.
Artist Jeff Olson of Door County is working on it. The names of all four firefighters will be carved into the back of the limestone sculpture. It’s called “The Final Alarm” and it will feature a firefighter holding an axe.
Olson’s niece married Lundgaard. He says he wanted to give their sons a place to go to remember their father, besides his gravesite.
Lundgaard was shot and killed on a medical call at the downtown transit center in May.
The supplies for the sculpture were donated.
