The state has $1.7 billion in reserves.
Wisconsin Policy Forum researcher Jason Stein says that’s the largest amount in more than four decades. He thinks the findings in the group’s annual financial report have to be tempered because that amount is expected to drop.
Stein says that’s because the budget approved by Governor Evers and lawmakers is projected to have the state spend more than it’s taking in over the next two years. He thinks the balance in the state’s general fund will fall by more than $800 million by the end of June of 2021.
