Homeowners in Outagamie County will have a smaller property tax bill from the county.
The county board approved next year’s budget Monday night, and the tax rate will drop to $3.86 per thousand dollars of value.
County Board Chair Jeff Nooyen says the county expects to bring in $20 million from a new half-cent sales tax. He says the property taxpayers will benefit from that, through a lower tax bill, and a reduction of the county’s debt.
The county will use $7 million of the revenue to lower property taxes. Another $5 million will go toward lowering the debt.
The board overwhelmingly decided to override a veto by County Executive Tom Nelson that would’ve taken $5 million away from capital projects. He thinks it’s illegal for the county to use the money that way.
The county’s share of the tax bill for property owners will be $386 for every $100,000 in value.
