City pools in Appleton will be closed this summer because of coronavirus.
Parks and Recreation Director Dean Gazza says they considered holding swimming lessons, but decided against it. He says even if they held lessons in smaller groups, a staff member would be exposed to groups of 25 children at a time.
Health Officer Kurt Eggebrecht says part of the decision to keep pools closed, and cancel all youth sport programs and events, is based on the trend he’s seeing since the state reopened. He says the numbers are going in the wrong direction, and it’s the best way to keep people safe.
Last week, the city reopened play areas, shelters, tennis and basketball courts, and the skateboard park. The city’s 30 parks, trails and golf course will remain open.
Adult leagues will still be held, but Gazza says participants will have to follow rules. Spectators won’t be allowed at softball games.
