A massive tree near Stockbridge is in jeopardy, after it was struck by lightning, and the flames spread inside the trunk and branches.
The base of the cottonwood in Lakeside Cemetery is nearly 30 feet around.
Stockbridge Fire Chief Mike Funk says they poured about 1,000 gallons of water onto the tree, and inside it. He says they couldn’t still reach all of the flames. He says instead of cutting off parts of the tree, they decided to let nature take its course.
The tree is still smoldering.
Town of Stockbridge officials are urging people to keep a safe distance from it, because it might not be stable anymore.
