Federal prosecutors are charging a Black man with extorting local businesses, for an incident that triggered a violent protest in Madison.
Devonere Johnson was arrested Tuesday afternoon, after he went into a bar with a baseball bat and megaphone. He’s charged with extorting businesses, by claiming they would be damaged or shut down, if they didn’t pay him.
Protesters later tore down two statues outside the state Capitol, and state Senator Tim Carpenter of Milwaukee was beaten on the Capitol lawn.
