The man killed in a reported hate crime in Fond du Lac County used to be a police officer, and an agent for the state justice department.
Fifty-five-year-old Phillip Thiessen of Fond du Lac died last Friday, along Winnebago Drive.
Prosecutors are charging 33-year-old Daniel Navarro with murder, as a hate crime. He’s accused of deliberately hitting Thiessen, while Thiessen was riding a Harley-Davidson motorcycle.
The victim also volunteered at Fondy Food Pantry with Sylvia Reed. She says he was a “bundle of energy” who would’ve helped anybody.
Prosecutors say Navarro admitted that he targeted the motorcycle because he believes Harley riders are typically racist white men.
He’s behind bars on a $1 million bond.
