“Tax Day” is late this year because of the pandemic, and that’s giving scammers more time to target people.
State Revenue Secretary Peter Barca says they see more attempts by thieves in the days before the tax deadline. He says the state gets the latest software to deal with the problem throughout the tax season.
Barca believes scammers are busiest before the deadline, because with so many returns coming in, they think the state won’t notice.
He says they set aside suspicious returns to investigate. He reports every year, they determine a couple of thousand of them are fraudulent.
Today is the last day to file without an extension.
