Drug overdoses are taking more lives in Winnebago County so far this year than COVID-19.
Sixteen people have died from coronavirus in the county since April 4th.
Since the beginning of the year, there have been 16 confirmed overdose deaths. Deputy Coroner Kimberly Maki says another seven cases are pending, and they’re also likely overdoses.
Sheriff John Matz believes jail diversion programs for drug users are an issue. He says he’s not against second chances, but he believes having consequences for a person’s actions makes a difference.
Over the first seven months of last year, there were nine overdose deaths in Winnebago County.
