Governor Evers says he’s encouraged by what’s included in the proposed UW System budget, but it’s too early to commit to anything yet.
The Board of Regents is asking for nearly $96 million in additional funding in the next state budget.
Evers says he’s talked with System President Tommy Thompson about it. He says they’re still working on the details, and he needs to know more about the overall look of the budget, including state revenue projections.
The proposal includes expanding UW-Madison’s free tuition program for families making up to $60,000 to all UW System schools. Thompson is also asking to borrow $1 billion to deal with losses caused by the pandemic.
Governors typically introduce their proposed two-year budget in February, so Evers has about six months to make decisions.
