Appleton’s top cop would support lowering the fine for marijuana possession, as long as it’s not too small.
Right now, it’s $200 dollars, and two city council members want to drop it to $5.
Police Chief Todd Thomas says they offer to cancel the ticket, if the person goes through a drug and alcohol assessment. He says if it’s only a $5 fine, some might not go to their court appearance, and then the automatic conviction would remain on their record.
Thomas believes the assessment is important because they can be an educational experience and an intervention.
The city’s safety and licensing committee plans to talk about the proposal in two weeks.
