There are red lights around Appleton to remember firefighters killed in the line of duty.
All six fire stations have them, along with some homes, Jones Park, and the fountain at Houdini Plaza.
Captain Derek Hanson says it’s for the annual Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend. A national ceremony was canceled because of the pandemic. He says it would’ve been very special for the department, because Driver-Engineer Mitch Lundgaard would’ve been added to the National Firefighters Memorial.
Hanson says about 100 firefighters die in the line of duty every year.
