HARRISON, Wis–A computer scam results in tens of thousand of dollars in losses for some Village of Harrison residents. The Calumet County Sheriff’s Office says multiple victims report receiving phone calls instructing them to download software to their computer or mobile device.
Scammers were then able to access banking and investment accounts on the devices. Funds were withdrawn, exchanged for cryptocurrency and likely sent overseas. The sheriff’s office says a total of nearly $78,000 was taken in the scam.
They remind people never to allow third party access to your computers or mobile devices. And don’t set up payments in the form of gift cards. Legitimate businesses, government agencies or utilities will never ask for that type of payment.
