Hi, Dave Edwards here and I have almost finished reading this comprehensive look at the life of Jim Thorpe, one of the greatest athletes of all time.
David Maraniss, who wrote a great book about Vince Lombardi, “When Pride Mattered”, does a very deep dive into Jim’s upbringing, his days at Carlisle when he developed into an outstanding athlete and the often-troubling times after his heyday when his vagabond life took him all over this country. Failed marriages, sketchy contact with his children and literally dozens of jobs would dominate his later years.
It really takes you on a ride from the ultimate success of being named the world’s best athlete at the Olympics, to being dirt poor and scrambling for your next paycheck. Plus, the extensive racism that Jim and his fellow Indian athletes faced along the way.
Great read by a world-class author.
Dave Edwards
